Discover our Tidbits

Struscio Fiorentino

A traditional Florentine custom of strolling through main streets and piazzas, especially in the evening, to see and be seen.
More than window-shopping, it emphasized appearance and social interaction.
The word comes from “strusciare” — “to rub” — evoking the ritual of brushing past friends and strangers in places like Piazza della Signoria, Piazza del Duomo, and Piazza Santa Croce.

Wine Windows

Small, historic, and quirky openings on Florentine facades, shaped like tiny arched doors and once closed by wooden shutters.
In the 17th century, they allowed wine and goods to be served directly to people in the street, proving essential during plagues by avoiding direct contact.
Many are still visible in Florence’s historic center, and some have recently reopened, reviving this charming tradition of buying wine from street-side vendors.

Zodiac of San Miniato

A 13th-century mosaic in the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, showing the zodiac signs linked to the months of the year.
At solar noon on June 21, sunlight highlights Cancer, making it the oldest functioning solstice sundial in Europe.
